The Conference was aimed at developing a better understanding of the way in which transport and communications networks are evolving in a rapidly changing world. It considered the complex and diverse challenges facing providers of transport and communications services and those responsible for establishing the associated institutional structures.

Attention was be paid to the role and evolution of transport and communication networks, global and transatlantic as well as regional and local, with an emphasis on the context of peripheral territories and related local networks. The island of St. Miguel in the Azores Islands (Portugal), located between Europe and United States, will serve as the ideal platform for discussing these topics.
